Fine craftsmanship behind this traditional Barbaresco. Gorgeous, ripe fruit and round body lead to a silky midpalate, with rose petal, roasted chestnut, plum, cherry and mineral complexity. Great balance, with firm but ripe tannins clamping down the finish.

  • Masseto 2008

    NT$ 36,500

    世界上最好的三大Merlot之一 ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

    義大利的Petrus ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

The 2008 Masseto is another huge wine. It boasts tons of energy in a tense, inward style I can only describe as implosive, as if the wine is holding back all of its energy. A deep core of black fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and new leather emerges from time to time, but the tannins are still imposing. There is no shortage of pedigree. I fully expect the 2008 to develop into one of the great Massetos. Needless to say, it will be interesting to taste the 2008 in vertical tastings in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.

The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage.

  • Masseto 2003

    NT$ 34,000

    世界上最好的三大Merlot之一 ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

    義大利的Petrus ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

The 2003 Masseto opens with a huge, expressive super-ripe nose. Ample and expansive on the palate, it displays much opulence in its generous fruit, with awesome concentration, outstanding length and a lovely vein of minerality which provides a level of freshness that is surprising for the vintage. A lingering note of sweetness punctuates the long finish. It should drink well for at least another decade, although it is absolutely irresistible today. It is a stunning wine. Owing to the challenging nature of the vintage, in 2003 Masseto was made only from the central part of the vineyard which is planted with the oldest vines.

    Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.

  • Isole e Olena Cepparello 2019

    NT$ 4,500

    100% Sangiovese

The 2019 Cepparello has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, as if all of its energy is focused inward. That won’t be an issue in another few years’ time, but for now readers should resist any temptation to open bottles. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous Sangiovese fruit, along with hints of blood orange, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco, all wrapped together by plush, silky contours. The purity of the fruit is just striking. In 2019, Cepparello is more finesse than power. I expect it will age beautifully over the next several decades.

  • Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2019

    NT$ 1,208

    80% Sangiovese, 15%Canaiolo, 5% Syrah

The 2019 Chianti Classico is a delicate, gracious wine that reflects both the mid-weight style of the year and the wines of this part of the appellation. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, herbs, mint and spice are all woven together. As always, the Isole Chianti Classico is a model of finesse and understatement.

  • Castello di Monsanto Chianti Gran Selezione “ Il Poggio ” 2017

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna il Poggio is elegant, translucent and absolutely delicious, all qualities that will make it very easy to enjoy and appreciate upon release. Hints of cedar, tobacco, licorice and spice give the 2017 striking aromatic presence. It’s a gorgeous wine, and especially finessed given the very warm, dry growing season.

  • Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2018

    NT$ 1,265

90% Sangiovese; 10% Canaiolo and Colorino

The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is a bold powerful wine. Black cherry, iron, tar, menthol and licorice give the 2018 a super-distinctive, wild profile. There is plenty of depth and volume. In 2018, the Riserva offers a decidedly wild, gamy expression of Sangiovese. Best of all, the Riserva remains a fabulous value.

  • Brezza Barolo Sarmassa 2018

    NT$ 2,254

    100% Nebbiolo

The 2018 Barolo Sarmassa benefits from the addition of the fruit that would have gone into the Riserva. A Barolo of breadth and power, the Sarmassa possesses terrific depth and plenty of substance. Dark plum, gravel, cured meat, smoke, licorice and incense add to a feeling of somber gravitas. I won’t be surprised if the 2018 turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Hints of dried herb, menthol, licorice, tobacco and incense linger on a finish graced with notable aromatic complexity.
