This is still ultra-elegant with its notably floral and highly spiced nose that is classy, expressive and reflects notes both of red and black fruit, anise, sandalwood and rose petal. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension to the attractively textured, well-detailed and layered medium weight plus flavors that deliver excellent length on the ever-so-mildly edgy finish. This is not a power example of the vineyard but it is one of the more refined versions of the vineyard that you’re likely to try. In terms of drinkability this is still on the way up and for my taste will need another 5 to 7 years first. Try from 2020+ (10/2015)

A spicy, ripe and pure nose of floral red Pinot fruit and rose petals possesses nuances of menthol, earth and a slight whiff of the sauvage that can also be found on the rich, serious and powerful big-bodied flavors that are sleekly muscled and very firmly structured yet they remain balanced, cool and harmonious on the monumentally long finish. This seems less structured than it really is as the abundant sap renders them less prominent if not invisible. While 15 to 20 years should see this at its apogee, this will still be alive and well at 50 years of age. (4/2007)

A notably ripe nose features airy and nicely complex black fruits with rich and relatively large-scaled flavors that manage to retain a solid sense of elegance on the delicious and ever-so-slightly edgy finish. This is still fresh but no longer bright as the acidity is relatively low and this is now drinking well though it should hold at this level for at least another decade. This is really quite lovely and the elegant Drouhin style works to good effect in a vintage like ’97. Consistent notes. (1/2008)

This is one of those wines that is frustratingly variable and while none of the bottles that I have had has been poor, my scores have ranged from 90 to 95 points, which is an enormous range and particularly so for such a (relatively speaking) young wine. At its best the overtly ripe and still relatively primary nose of spice and earth-inflected black currant offers excellent complexity. There is excellent richness and power to the big-bodied and concentrated flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract on the hugely long finish where about the only nit is a hint of warmth. At worst the finish is drying, woody and noticeably warm. In all cases though its seems clear that this is still very much on the way up and a wine that will require most of the next decade before it arrives at its peak. (4/2017)

Only two barrels of this wonderful wine were produced. Les Cras is on the Vosne side of the commune and, as a result, produces a very silky style of Nuits-St-Georges. That said, it is noticeably more masculine than the other wines tasted in the Lamarche line-up. Dark and brooding in the glass, there is a purity and precision about this wine. Violets and blueberry fruit are wrapped up in the silkiest of tannins, with a precise mineral-driven finish. Definitely a keeper.

A menthol top note can be found on the relatively high-toned red currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of Asian tea, orange peel, hoisin and sandalwood. There is notably more volume and mid-palate concentration to the big-bodied flavors that manage to be at once elegant yet powerful, all wrapped in a very firm, mildly austere and hugely long finale. Excellent quality here but note that patience will be required before this robust effort reaches its apogee.
