  • Bruno Clair Savigny Les Beaune La Dominode 2013

    BH – 89

Allen Meadows’ Burghound (89 points) – “A background application of wood sets off gently earthy aromas of mostly dark berry fruit. There is fine detail and plenty of punch to the lightly mineral-inflected and well-concentrated flavors that conclude in a slightly drying finish. This is one of those wines where the balance isn’t perfect yet there is very good depth and length.”

93-96 points  Allen Meadows – Burghound

” Discreet but not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for the airy, ripe and very pure red and dark cherry, earth and wonderfully broad-ranging spice notes. There is terrific punch to the big, robust, tautly structured and well-muscled flavors that ooze with minerality and buckets of mid-palate sap that buffers the prominent tannic spine on the youthfully austere finish. This massively long effort should age glacially but gracefully for several decades. ” (1/2017)

    Carema Pare 2018

    NT$ 700

This Nebbiolo from Carema shows a light, fragrant nose with notes of sour cherries, cool tobacco, rose petals and a hint of soap. Some sweet lingonberries. Light and nice.
The taste is initially easy going and light with notes of ripening red cherries, dry gravel and dried flowers. The acidity is high and makes the ending a tad dry. Not that harmonious. The nose is better.

Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Vigna le Rocche Reserva 2013

    NT$ 15,500

The 2012 Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigna Le Rocche (red label) was bottled last September and has already eased into a comfortable and promising stage in its very early evolution. Bruna Giacosa tells me that this wine will be made in 2014 and 2016, so future supplies are plentiful. The jury is out on whether the wine will be produced in 2015, but Bruna tells me it is unlikely (albeit by no means confirmed at this point). Fruit selection was extreme in 2012. This is a warm vintage expression, and the wine is beautifully rich and velvety as a result. That textural richness is what stands out most. The primary fruit is bold and very well defined. There is a point of dark cherry ripeness, but it adds to the generous fiber and softness of the mouthfeel. Of the many beautiful vintages I have tasted of this wine, I suspect the 2012 might be faster in its evolution.

    Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco 1996

    NT$ 15,500

Fine craftsmanship behind this traditional Barbaresco. Gorgeous, ripe fruit and round body lead to a silky midpalate, with rose petal, roasted chestnut, plum, cherry and mineral complexity. Great balance, with firm but ripe tannins clamping down the finish.

Best from 2003 through 2006. 884 cases made.

    世界上最好的三大Merlot之一 ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

    義大利的Petrus ~ Masseto (馬塞多)

The 2008 Masseto is another huge wine. It boasts tons of energy in a tense, inward style I can only describe as implosive, as if the wine is holding back all of its energy. A deep core of black fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and new leather emerges from time to time, but the tannins are still imposing. There is no shortage of pedigree. I fully expect the 2008 to develop into one of the great Massetos. Needless to say, it will be interesting to taste the 2008 in vertical tastings in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.

The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage.
